'Perfect hair' needs attention to detail

Now that you've chosen a wedding date, it's time to start the countdown that is wedding planning.

Many brides-to-be give reception sites and details top priority, but forget to devote the same consideration to bridal hair styles.

Between scheduling, fittings and samplings, it can be easy to forget about hair care and wedding day preparation.

To remind brides of the importance of this wedding-day accessory, ISO, creator of Innovative Styling Options for hair texture, offers these easy hair-care pointers:

-Apart from being blessed with great hair genes, beautiful hair also can be the result of the masterful hands of a good stylist. If you do not have a winning relationship with your stylist, now is the time to seek out a new one.

When you are comfortable with your stylist, talk early on about what you envision for wedding-day hair and schedule a practice run-through.

-Don't skip haircuts because you want long hair for your wedding. Regular cuts are essential to eliminating dead ends that can look dull. Trims also can refresh the shape of your hair and make it easier to manipulate into your preferred wedding style. Plus, hair just looks and feels healthier with regular trims.

-You don't want to try drastic cuts or color options too close to the wedding, where you might not be able to fix a faux pas if the look isn't to your liking. Rather, experiment with color or texture a few months in advance of the wedding so you'll have time to tweak the look toward your desired finished product. To maintain color, remember to protect hair from harmful sunrays.

-Many brides-to-be desire soft, free-flowing waves, or pulled-up looks with a few escaping curly tendrils. But not everyone is blessed with a head of curls. There are hair-care products that can boost texture.

-Wedding hair might involve intricate up-dos, hair extensions or pulled-back locks. But too much tension on the hair follicle for a prolonged period of time with tight braids or extensions actually can pull hair out by the roots. Release your hair as soon as possible after your wedding day.

-Honeymoons often involve escapes to tropical paradises. Hot, humid temperatures can cause even the best-behaved hair to frizz. Practice easy, casual pulled-back looks that will help tame hair. Don't forget to rinse hair thoroughly with cool water if you've been swimming in a chlorinated pool or a salty ocean and can't shower immediately after. Otherwise, you might end up with a head of frizzy, sticky hair.

-Always be prepared for the unexpected, which might include a few errant locks that occur on your wedding day. Pack an "emergency kit" stocked with a brush or comb, hairspray, bobby pins or barrettes, anti-frizz or shine serum, and any other necessities you can think of. It's also a good idea to have a backup pair of panty hose, safety pins and even a travel sewing kit just in case the unexpected is a wardrobe malfunction and not a hair emergency.
